The Philadelphia Eagles made a step towards keeping Michael Vick for the upcoming season recently. Vick was due a$1.5 million dollar bonus or the Eagles would have to release him. They paid it and now there is a lot of talk about what Eagles management is thinking with Vick, McNabb, and Kolb on the roster. And it’s a pretty good question.I think most football fans could look at what Philadephia did in 2009 and it made some sense to sign Vick. He was available relatively cheap. McNabb has been a little injury prone in recent years, and Kevin Kolb had not shown himself ready to start consistently in the NFL yet.

But coming into this year, especially with Vick saying that he is ready to assume a starting position for some NFL team, I think keeping Vick raises a few more questions. But I’ll offer a few thoughts on the subject and we’ll see what the rest of you football nuts think as well.

I believe that a year later the Eagles have a lot more confidence in Kolb. I also believe that if they can deal McNabb or Vick or both, and get what they want for either of them, they will make a deal and move forward with Kolb as the starter. Part of that is economics also. Vick’s salary this year is a little steep for a backup or third stringer.

What the problem will be for the Eagles however (at least I think it will be) is that the NFL may just wait them out and then try to get McNabb or Vick cheaper than the Eagles want to deal them. I mean who would at this point pay a premium price for either of these guys. St. Louis needs an answer but they can grab a Sam Bradford in the draft. The Cardinals have some big questions at QB, but I don’t see them going for either McNabb or Vick.

I could name a few more but with all the uncertainty around an uncapped year, I think that the Eagles may be taking a big gamble. And personally, that is what I think they are doing. And time will tell if it’s a smart one or not. Or whether they have something completely different in mind and are going to surprise all of the NFL and it’s fans.

Your thoughts Football Nuts?
